A History of Working for Parksville

In the current council term, I have served as a liaison to Access Oceanside Association, Parksville Beach Festival, Ballenas Secondary School student groups/youth, and a member of the Audit Committee and Local Government Contract Management Committee (RCMP)

I have a history of strong advocacy for environmental and watershed protection and nature conservancy, sustainable growth respecting the current Official Community Plan and support for recreational amenities. I have supported improved beach access using mobi-mats, Oceanside track, arts and culture, pickleball courts and addition of park space. During this term, I supported local businesses and downtown vibrancy in partnership with Parksville Downtown Business Association, advocated for better supports and provincial collaboration for people with mental health, addictions and the unhoused. I have supported funding requests by our volunteer fire department and the RCMP.

My goals:

  • Drinking water security and watershed protection
  • Quality of life enhancement
  • Protect our green spaces, parks, and coastline
  • Progressive OCP policies with a strong community focus
  • Support local businesses
  • Fiscal prudence to keep property taxes low
  • Address homelessness collaboratively

My Values

During my interactions with community members, I constantly hear concerns about the scale and pace of development, lack of supporting infrastructure, ongoing water restrictions, rising property taxes and the desire for a recreational facility- pool, rec center (multiplex). During my four years as councillor, I stood up for the community on these issues.

I have been serving in the Canadian Armed Forces since 2020. Currently, I am a Logistics Officer with RCAF (Reserve) based out of CFB Comox

I believe that we, as humans, have a responsibility to respect and take care of the earth and each other. I live these values at Parksville Council by looking critically at development, conserving green spaces, advocating for our drinking water and watershed, and supporting local businesses and social services for Parksville citizens.

You can see my values in the way I voted on issues brought to council in the past four years. Here are just a few examples:

– I initiated a motion to designate vacant land to be parkland.

– I voted “no” to developments on environmentally sensitive lands and major changes to OCP.

– I voted “yes” to the zoning change requirement to allow a mental health facility to be housed at 188 McCarter Street.

– I proposed a motion for council to forward to the Union of BC Municipalities to create a municipal, provincial and first nations board to work together on watershed governance.

I believe the businesses of Parksville, as well as its citizens will benefit from a city that has an abundance of clean drinking water and natural spaces. I am committed to continuing to make Parksville a better place for all of us to live, work and visit.
